The Pieniny range is not the highest or most difficult mountain range in
Poland, although there are numerous hazards. Tourists should remember that:

1. Steep, rocky peaks are secured by metal balustrades. Remaining at the sightseeing spots on Trzy Korony (Three Crowns), Sokolica, Czerezik or Pieniny Castle Ruin on the Castle Mountain during a storm increases the risk of being struck by lightning.

2. Older people with blood circulation problems should bear in mind the frequent changes in air pressure in the mountains; if it looks likely to rain, they should not set out on the trails. The effort needed to climb up and down the steep slopes and scale the high peaks is considerable and may cause fainting or even heart attacks. Raised humidity and temperature can compund the difficulties faced by inexperienced or unfit visitors.

3. Be careful of falling stones and fragments of rock when climbing the steep mountains.  It is absolutely forbidden to throw stones or other objects from the sightseeing galleries.

4. Your equipment should be chosen according to terrain and weather conditions. Strong shoes with a good tread pattern which protect the ankles are recommended foot-wear; consider taking other useful accessories such as a waterproof jacket and umbrella.

5. Always take some water with you when going out to the mountains.

6. If you stray from the marked tourist trail you increase the risk of being bitten by the common adder (Vipera verus). The vipers like to bask in the sun on the rocks or screes. Once bitten, you should immediately inform the GOPR office or any park employee you encounter. If possible you should also go to the nearest medical unit to be assesed for treatment (which may include administering anti-venom serum).

We hope that you will leave the Pieniny range with fond memories. Please be warned, however, that the mountains can be dangerous for the unprepared tourist.
